Four stop-at-nothing Jacobean bravos – the armed and dangerous younger sons of recusant families dedicated to the old faith. Did you know that ‘conspire’ literally means ‘to breathe together’? Imagine them then, heads close above a guttering candle in the dark corner of a Southwark alehouse - ready to spill out into the streets for a fatal encounter with the Crown’s hated officers. Or out in the countryside in a heroic last stand at some ramshackle manor house besieged by the remorseless agents of Sir Robert Cecil.
